The goal of the program is to develop successful leaders in today’s organization. Our graduates know how to think strategically about leading people in a diverse environment, make sound ethical decisions, and utilize technology to provide a strategic advantage at an appropriate level of risk. In addition, our graduates are prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

UMBC’s graduate program in Technical Management prepares professionals in technical fields to become successful leaders in their organizations. Our graduates develop an understanding of how to think strategically about leading people in a diverse environment, make sound ethical decisions, and utilize technology to provide a strategic advantage at an appropriate level of risk. We prepare our graduates to succeed in a rapidly changing world and develop a forward-thinking mentality to create future-proof organizations.


The Technical Management program is built around a core set of six courses that provide the foundational knowledge in leadership, communications, ethics and project management. The core courses are supplemented by technically-oriented courses in entrepreneurship, international project management, and organizational leadership. Students can also earn certificates in specialties like systems engineering, cybersecurity, and others along with the Master’s degree.

By offering a well-rounded curriculum, we support our graduates in developing the technical and soft skills needed to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Admissions Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics related field.

  • GRE scores are not required for admission
  • Applicants should have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Applicants should have at least two years experience in a technical field
  • International applicants should refer to the International Admission Page for special admission information

    • Insert names of references into “References” section
    • Complete residency information to be reviewed for in-state tuition rates
  • Request official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions to be sent to UMBC Graduate School, 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, MD 21250 or emailed to gradschool@umbc.edu.
  • Submit resume as an attachment in the “Resume” section, or submit to gradschool@umbc.edu.

  • Statement outlining the student’s goals and expectations in the program. This also is an opportunity for applicants to further explain their background and qualifications for the program and provide any additional information about themselves or their career experience that they feel will benefit the evaluation of their application.

Financial Assistance

The MPS: Technical Management is an applied, professional degree and as such does not offer research-based assistantships. However, students are eligible to apply for non-research based graduate assistantships offered through other academic departments.
